I must admit I can't differentiate Mk I from Mk II apart from coating. Can anyone please enlighten me? TIA.
BTW, I sure hope the front element is not rotating anymore. The Mk I is a great travel lens but this issue really bugs me.
I tried to play spot the difference and didn't get far either. Did the mk1 have a coating or not? Or UD element? I wonder if we can draw parallels here with the 18-55 IS cosmetic refresh.

Just cosmetic changes I'm afraid. It's still a good lens especially regarding its pricing.
Assuming the street price doesn't go up because it is "new". I guess it wont affect kit bundles, but it might affect the street price if you get it individually.

It must have some kind of coating, right? I think that all elements are coated.

Yes. It's even mentioned in the PZ test. <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />
According to photoscala.de the lens has been optically "optimized", however Canon does not give any detailed information about these optimizations.
The lens includes an upgraded CPU that provides slightly faster AF and improved IS efficiency.
Also, the external coating of the lens tube is said to be improved, providing slightly better grip.

My hunch is that they found a way to lower the production costs. The above sounds too little to bother to make a MK II version.

Yes, like the 18-55 IS mark II. THe insert also says: "Objektivkonstruktion optimiert" which probably means "costs less".
That is certainly true for the outside, where the labeling/markings are simplified. A slightly better CPU would make sense, but at the same time this
is probably also cheaper than the old one.
