Hi Warwick,

D7000 is the only DSLR I've used, so I can't compare them.

It's taking me a while to get to know well (I've not been using it as much as I think most would: too much work and DiY..!) but I like it a lot, and am much more used to, and comfortable with, the weight than when I first got it.

Excellent image quality, you can customise the controls extensively so it works how you want it to, it's very good in low light, has a good, bright viewfinder, autofocus works with 'D' series lenses (not sure the others do).

The 3100 (especially) and 5100 would be very different. What 'real world' aspects / features are you most interested in?

Second cam. as a backup ? If so, you need to make your mind as to features/ergonomics that YOU need <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> From the listed cameras I own the D7000 and so far I like it a lot, not a single problem with it.. Different colour rendition though, when compared to the D700 and also a slight propensity to overexposing in very bright light (matrix metering), neither being a problem really, very good battery (about 1400 raws in a mildly cold environment). Survives a mild rain without a problem as well.

The 5100 has the same sensor, different firmware, very good alternative if you don't need D7000-specific features..

What is your 1st camera, and which lenses do you have. And, why do you want a 2nd camera?

In that case, if it has to be APS-C, a D7000, for better image quality under difficult conditions, and better control over the camera.

All your lenses being Nikons is not the most helpful answer <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />....

If some are Nikons without their own AF motor, go for the D7000. The D5100 and D3100 lack AF motor.

If they all have their own AF motor (your lenses), the D5100 might be interesting for its swivel LCD.

Right, assuming you work with the AF-S 60 and/or 105 micros you'd be fine with the Nikon 5100, swivel LCD helping in case of live view focusing. I wonder though, what's wrong with the D3's imaging for the purpose of macro photography ? <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Hi,

For a macro camera I would have a serious look at the D5100 with it's swivel screen. The optical finder, unless you buy an angle finder attachment, is typically very difficult to use in a macro setting on a tripod. Though the fixed screen on the D7000 might also work ok - I use a fixed screen E-P1 for macro shooting on a tripod and get by though a swivelling one would sometimes be nice.

Obviously the D5100 is lower spec and would need a bit more pampering - but for the price differential between this one and the D7000 you can easily afford a hammer to drive nails <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' /> Perhaps the biggest downside to D5100 is the single input dial. How much of an issue no-AF with non AF-S lenses is for macro shooting, is a judgement call you will have to make yourself. You might discover that AF is pretty useless for macro shooting anyway.

A big bonus to the D7000 is the support of Nikon AI lenses. I just like old MF guys <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Hope that helps.
