Doubt in new equipment - Advice please
#1
Hello friends ... after a 2-3 years out of this world ... I'm back to the photo world .. xd

Now I have no equipment ... I want to start with low-medium level equipment (affordable price) ... I am thinking in Nikon D5100 or Canon 600D. Whats your opinion?. How are this models and manufacturers now?

Thanks a lot

Both cameras are certainly "can't loose" products. The Sony A33/A55 is certainly also worth a thought.

What do you think are the pros and cons of the 5100D, 600D and the Sony you says??. What about the quality of the medium lvl lenses of each manufacturer?

thx

Can you get to a store and get hands on with them? You can compare specs as long as you like, but the feel is also a major part of the experience.
dA Canon 7D2, 7D, 5D2, 600D, 450D, 300D IR modified, 1D, EF-S 10-18, 15-85, EF 35/2, 85/1.8, 135/2, 70-300L, 100-400L, MP-E65, Zeiss 2/50, Sigma 150 macro, 120-300/2.8, Samyang 8mm fisheye, Olympus E-P1, Panasonic 20/1.7, Sony HX9V, Fuji X100.

Also depends on how you will use the camera.

Do you plan to use it in auto mode? Or Aperture priority? Or Manual? (Scroll wheel and their placement)

Will you be using multiple off-camera strobes? Or just the on-camera flash? (Commander mode)

Do you plan on shooting raw and post-process? Or just shoot straight jpeg?

What is your budget?

How many lenses do you plan to purchase? Do you plan on getting pro level lenses in the future? Or plan to just stick with the entry level equipment?

Well, a medium level setup on the Sony side would be the Zeiss 16-80 + Sony 70-300G (or Tamron 70-300 VC). Both great lenses. What I really like about the Sonys is the electronic viewfinder with superimposed live histogram. The AF may be a tad slower than on the Nikon/Canon but that's not by much. I had no issues here during a usage period of a few months.

The Canon 15-85 USM IS + Tamron 70-300 VC

and

Nikkor 16-85 VR + Tamron 70-300 VC

would be very decent solutions in their respective worlds.

In case detailed reviews of the camera bodies would be helpful, have you checked out DP Review..?

thanks everybody. I have read the reviews of dpreview, but I prefer the advice and review of other photografers like you ... I dont trust very much in dprevew reviews.

The option of Sony sounds fine ... the slow autofocus (compared with the others manuf.) it can be a problem with the portraits of my kids. How much is the sony autofocus slow?.

What do you think about a Canon 40D for 400 euros?. Its better option than Canon 600D, Nikon 51000 or Sony models??

"slow" is not a correct description for the Sony AF. Single shot AF is extremely fast actually. Object tracking is simply slower compared to the Canon / Nikon counterpart.

An EOS 40D is still a good camera. 400EUR sounds about right for a new one.

Hi Brisco,

This query... it might help to qualify it: better in what respect?
