Ummm, if you are used to good lenses, certainly stay away from the old version of the Sigma EX12-24 F/4.5-F/5.6 ... Its only redeeming factor IMO is its very, very low distortion.
This lens made me run back to the shop where I got the best of three, and get the Nikkor 14-24 F/2.8 in the first place <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='
' />. Not in my budget, at twice the price of the Sigma, but I just couldn't live with the Sigma. I even went as far as using a standard Nikkor-> Eos mount adapter, and fixating the aperture lever with a toothpick <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />, until such time I received a G-EOS adapter.
Havign said that, I am not familiar with the new version. If they pulled off the same trick as with the new 8-16 fro APS-C, you may have a winner here, if a reasonable price is important.
As to the Zeiss 18 you mentioned: I wasn't overly impressed with it mayself, on Canon. It is not in the saem class as the 21, and the Nikkor 14-24 beats it hands down.
If you want to go below 20 mm, you only have very few choices, if you want the utmost in IQ. And the Nikkor 14-24 is right at the top of the heap for Nikon. And that si both fro primes and for zooms...
