How camera-dependant is CA?

Someone over at dpreview forum claims that pictures from his K20D display less CA than what he gets with the K10D and K7 (using the same lenses). Has anyone else noticed significant differences in CA between different cameras using the same lenses?

Which kind of CA he was talking about? Lateral or longitudinal CA? Or was he talking about "purple fringing"?

So... that sheds no light on the matter. Not clear what he was referring to as "CA".. usually, we are talking about lateral CA when talking about CA, and it means that one or more wavelengths of light are being projected by the optics larger than other colours/wavelengths. This mainly is noticeable at contrasty edges near the frame sides, where coloured edges appear.



Since the chromatic aberration happens in the optics, one would not see a difference from one camera body to the next.



Probably the poster was talking about the more elusive "purple fringing", which is not "CA". But, since no examples are being shown, we can't be sure.

There are lots of factors that can make the visibility of CA different. Some digital cameras even do in-camera processing to hide CA artifacts (e.g. newer Nikons) and almost all manufacturers and photo editing software offer some way of doing this at least in post. Maybe you're referring to this.



But strictly speaking, CA is dependent on two things:



1. Lens

2. Viewing magnification



Purple fringing is both lens and medium related. It shows up more on digital but it also depends on the lens design.
