mm, OK. I find what you are saying a bit disturbing (about the 35 AF-S)... These lenses have been constructed primamrily for full frame use but still... Lets see what 85mm 1.4G shows, I cant wait.

At least that's the words I would choose as a reviewer.

Lenstip did not rate the Nikon 85mm f1.4 G below average...
The say that on one hand, wide open, it does not do better than the $300 Samyang, and that is for a $1700 lens (not strange, the Samyang is a very impressive lens).
They continue to say that stopping down it becomes sharper than other 85mm's the tested, and that its astigmatism correction is sensational. Also the comment on the good build quality and silent and efficient AF.
All in all a very favorable conclusion, they just wished it was a bit cheaper.

You are right, the lens was not classified as "below average", I exaggerated that.
But don´t take my comment literally, please.
I meant the measured resolution (by them) was just average (i.e. in the range that is of most interest here - f1.4-f2.0), nothing exceptional
(which is what Markus suggested here). Esp.the central resolution at f1.4-f2.0 has no "wow" factor (compared to Canon 85L for instance) by their measurement. Being an update of 85/f1.4D, which was famous esp.for its central sharpness (and too blurry corners, too), one would expect better performance in the latest 1.4G here.
Lets see and compare the data from Photozone.de. Im really curious.

OMG, this lens is crazy sharp, I count f1.4 into that too! Can´t believe what I am seeing! I´m going to buy it in all probability.
Do you think I can place my order on-line or would it be worth it to go somewhere where they have more copies of the lens and check for sample variations (at f1.4) ?
Anyway, Markus - thanks a lot for this and all the pre-review communication in forums, I appreciate that (and dont want to abuse it...).

Yep, it's sharp straight from f/1.4.

The 85 1.2L II has better center resolution at f/1.2 than the 84 1.4G wide open:

Sure the 85 1.4D was sharper in the center than in the corners but the question is, was it sharper than the rest? <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='  ' />
The "latest 1.4G" doesn't mean anything other than a built-in motor. For example it took Nikon 35 years to develop their 24 1.4 and here's how it compares to the 24 1.4L II:
