At least they resisted to go beyond 18mp.

DPr also mentions a new 18-55 III (non-IS). I haven't seen this one mentioned anywhere else, though. And who would purchase such a lens, anyway?

The IS II looks already cheaper than the current IS I. At some stage these cost-cutting measurements are just brain-dead.

From 2 previews:

The EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 III receives the same optical design as seen in the IS versions, which should result in a significant improvement in image quality over its predecessors.
The 600D gets a 'new' kit lens, the EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS II. According to Canon this is identical in specification to the previous version, and features exactly the same optics and IS system: it simply has a revised external design. The visible changes suggest a paring down of production costs, for example the 'white square' alignment mark for mounting the lens is now simply painted on, rather than moulded.
The first impressions of the 1100D are those of a camera that has been aggressively engineered to keep costs down. The body materials are plain and lightweight, giving a less reassuring sense of build quality than the recent Rebel models had started to offer. This isn't entirely out-of-step with the moves made by Panasonic with its trimmed-back DMC-G10 but it's probably the first time we've seen it taken to this extreme on an interchangable lens camera.
If the 200-400 performs well it might be a very welcome update/replacement to the 100-400... Hopefully they will send the first one to you for testing <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

A 200-400/4L is pure lens porn. The costs will be well about 5000EUR so the audience is limited to professionals and rich amateurs. This is limiting the number of potential readers by quite a margin and it's also the reason why we haven't tested something like a 400/2.8 L IS II by now.

We are all getting excited by an Audi R8 but the truth is that most of us are really interested in the A1-A4 range (assuming that Audi is your car brand of course).

I think a lot of people like reading reviews of things they never will buy. The dream is more interesting than reality.

Pout; had no clue it would be that expensive. Seems a bit excessive given the 100-400 is only 1/4 the cost. Oh well.

Don't forget the effect the aperture plays. The front element(s) will be similar in size to the 300mm f/2.8 which will dominate the glass cost.

It's not just faster, it's also constant. As soon as a zoom becomes a constant aperture lens it's usually much larger than a variable aperture lens of the same range, even if the max aperture of the variable aperture lens is the same as the max of the constant lens.
