Hi Markus,

Thank you for the review.

I noticed a probable mistake in the text (MTF section)

Maybe you mean "Surprisingly, the extreme corners show slightly more sharpness than the corners from f/2.8" onwards" instead of "Surprisingly, the corners show slightly more sharpness than the corners from f/2.8 onwards".

Nice lens, except for the price. Canon is a bit less expensive there (at least at present! <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> ).

Thank you aganin

Hi Alessandro,

thanks for spotting this. Actually, I meant to say "Surprisingly, the corners show slightly more sharpness than the borders from f/2.8 onwards."

Corrected.

I am curious if Nikon is making the lens sharper near the borders on purpose. Hmmmm...

I also just noticed you use Capture one 5 now... how do you like it?

Actually it's not surprising at all. Most manufacturer MTFs of wides to ultra-wide lenses show a certain recovery (if not in absolute terms then as a trend) towards the corners

Nice review Markus ...

just one question ... I know you were mentioning this in a different thread once ...

why are those differences in the vignetting values between the Nikon-tests and

the Canon-tests? Because, if you would take this lens and the Canon 24Lii, and

you would take comparable (wide open) images on film, I doubt that one would

see a difference of about 1 stop in the corners (between the Nikon and the Canon

exposure).

Just a thought ... Rainer

Hey Rainer. Markus actually states that in his reviews:

"We're performing our vignetting analysis based on (uncorrected) JPEGs straight from the camera. The JPG engine of the Nikon D3x features a rather flat gradation curve, thus has a moderate contrast characteristic, resulting in comparatively low vignetting figures - the corresponding Canon figures are roughly 40% higher due to the more aggressive default contrast setting."

So that is just it... the tonal curve in standard JPEGs of the EOS 5D mk II is more steep than the tonal curve of the D3x. More contrast in the standard JPEGs for the 5D mean darker corners, more apparent light fall off.

Looks to be a very nice lens, Markus. One point though, obviously I was curious how it compares to the Canon 24mm f1.4 L USM II.

According to your test data (and that of Klaus), the lenses perform equally well. Why do you rate the Nikon half a star more, don't you guys try to rate in a similar manner?

That half star is mostly for the better bokeh of the Nikkor.

In the field, though, there's probably not really much of a difference between the two, that's why it got the same rating as the Canon (4 stars).

It's obvus why is Nikkor better rated than Canon, it has better bokeh and better extreme corner performance than Canon.
