Pentax users, where are they?
#21
Hi everybody,

I just registered here to say: Here I am, a Pentax user ;-)

many words, but please let me explain, why Pentax?

When I was looking for my first dSLR I wanted good optics too, but for little money. I decided to go with old manual lenses and researched which system would be best for that. I found that Pentax is the best system for M42 lenses. I went to stores and picked up all the cameras at hand, not only Pentaxes, new and used bodies ( luckily I was in Japan then which meant easy access to handling cameras in stores and to used gear ) and my choice was a used *istDs, it handled better than any other. I love it for being small and making a small but powerful package with an old MF prime mounted. So does my recently acquired K-x.

Today I know that, even if I was not into old MF lenses, Pentax still would be my choice, again for the same reason, powerful but small package handling well. I would love to have a DA70 to catch faces on the street, who would think one has an effectively 105mm lens mounted?

The new 2.4/35 is a perfect move of Pentax. It is meant to be a cheap entrance to prime lenses for users who recently bought into Pentax getting the K-x, or who will get the K-r, a camera which should be great, more so even the K-5. And this lens is just that, and a 35mm is clever for a start though hopefully there will be more 'affordable', 'cheap' primes from Pentax to follow.

I am not surprised at all that it is 'only' f2.4. All DA line of lenses ( only exceptions 1.4/55 and 2.8/14? ) focus on being small instead of being fast. I like that...would love to have some, and would continue to use my manual Takumars or other fast M42 lenses for narrow dof - fast lens wide open - shots.

quote 'Robiec': 'The K-5 looks like a useful upgrade from my K20D but my order will have to wait until a Katzeye comes out for it.'

You can go ahead and order the K-5 :-)

Almost certainly the K-5 will have the same viewfinder as the K-7, and thus take the same Katzeye which already is available for the K-7

As mentioned a couple of times the Pentax tests have not been abandoned. They will restart based on the K-5. This was planned and communicated.

Thats excellent news Klaus. Sorry if I haven't been around enough to see this before.

Yes, I'm one of those folks. I'm still with the K10, which is quite good especially when doing some post processing. The advantages of K5 should be enough to step up now...well, just if the camera is as written in the spec ;-)

I'm quite curious how good this 18-135mm (28-200 in the old 35mm world) will be. It could be a good walk around lens for the every day use.

At least Pentax seems to be still alive and something is going in the forward direction.

True the K-5 may be a class above the K-7 or previous K10D/K20D market wise or specifications wise but to me its a replacement or upgrade for users of those cameras I mentioned. A K-R would not feel like an upgrade handling / build wise to a K20D for example, it lacks the 2nd dial and capacity for a grip <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

The K-5 looks to be a very good upgrade for those still with a K10D or K20D especially and perhaps there is enough for the K-7 users as well.

Off topic a little but do you have examples of shots taken with the Sigma 8-16 online anywhere?

K10D to K-5 would be a great step up, you'll get resolution, ISO (won't know yourself in an available light situation), fps, bigger better screen at the back, a dedicated ISO button, the list goes on and on <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Only downside will be the loss of battery cover and sd card doors, they to me shouted detail quality or over engineering ala Mercedes back in the day.

It really annoys me when people say the K10D doesn't have a dedicated ISO button. It does. Sure, it doesn't say so, but if you press, and hold, the OK button and turn a wheel, it changes ISO. So it doesn't say ISO, but it is never the less an ISO button.

A lot of journalists would argue that point but I stand corrected of course. Same on my K20D <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Actually, it was in a review of the K20D I learned that it was like that for the K10D as well =)

What do you mean with the journalists? I didn't get that :/

The majority of articles I ever read online or in magazine format always lamented the lack of a dedicated ISO button. Articles are written by 'Journalists' generally <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

TBH the title Journalist might be overkill for some of them.

Hehe, I see what you mean <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

I think it's a result of either not reading the user manual (which I was guilty of, kinda, I read it, but before I knew enough to get it all really, I should have read it again later), or just not used the camera enough before writing about it.

Hi,

What happened to our Pentax

users?

[/quote]

Probably busy taking pics instead of rambling on forums about stuff that nobody knows how it works yet?
