Pixel Race Continues
#1
Hi,

looking at what emerged in the past days, it seems that the pixel race continues. Today's Sony cameras have 16 or 14 MP, the new entry level Nikon has 14 MP. It seems a camera with 12 MP looks dated now <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />

Pff. Canon apparently plans to make any camera with less than 100MP look dated soon enough. Must be in cahoots with hard drive manufacturers and CPU makers.

I don't think it is a race any more. Increases seemed to have slowed down a lot. Now it is more like gradual growth.

Each pixel doesn't need to be perfect, the goal is the best total output. A significant increase in pixel count is my preferred way to achieve that with existing technologies.

canon deveoped a 50mp chip 2 years back. So far this hasnt become commercial reality. I presume that we will not see 120mp in commercially available 35mm camera before 10 years time. (obviuoly medium format back may reach that number much sooner)

Speaking of the devil, here's the latets developmonth, 120 MP sensor:

If this is anything to go by, expect an APS-H camera with 30 MP or more, IOW, for the1D Mk V, with noise, DR and IQ similar to current 16 MP level 1D Mk IV (16 MP is about 1/4 of the 50 MP APS-H sensor development announced 2 years ago <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />).

Kind regards, Wim
