It is not just astro photography that will see effects. I really rather dislike the way Nikon gets rid of chroma noise, desaturating colours in the process. I rather have the photographer have the choice of how to deal with noise!
And if you really do like what Nikon does to its data, then it is easy to replicate its effects in PS (blur the a and b channel in Lab-mode).
So, I for one am HAPPY that Canon does not resort to those levels of NR you have no grip on or say in. That is the whole idea about RAW, give the photographer the freedom to do or not do what he/she wants and needs. If i would want the camera to do crap to the data, I would buy a Nikon. So no need for other companies to do the same, you already can buy it right now.
