Hi guys,

             It looks like the lifespan of the very sharp and renowned Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 VC and non VC is coming to an end. This lens (which I owned) is finally being discontinued, being the staple diet of many a photographer on a budget for what seems like ten years or so.

 

With many lens producers revamping their lens range, maybe this lens is being targeted to be replaced by Tamron with a lens that has the build and feature set that was lacking slightly in the earlier model, both it and the Sigma required the camera body to be switched to manual.

 Clearance sales are popping up and the lens can be found new on line (Priceminister) for as little as €160 for the non VC and €172 for the VC version, the non VC being the sharper of the two.

 

  A quality F2.8 constant lens for the price of a 18-55mm kit lens!

 

  ....Now do I get one?

Actually I did buy a S/H one, in the Pentax K mount, I just couldn't get a decent shot out of it in focus, I spent an afternoon fiddling with AFMA, you would set it to one distance and it would be a foot off at another distance, obviously a dud, it got returned.

  But as the Tammy VC version is considerably softer at larger apertures I see the merit of Sigma's OS which is as sharp with it as the Tammy is without VC.

 

  In my view both the two companies are going to bring out something rather special soon......how long is it since we have we been waiting for a new standard F2.8 zoom?

 

  There just isn't a third party all singing all dancing version at the moment,  I would lean towards a Tamron for focusing accuracy reasons,

The focus accuracy in Canon land is the other way around, as far as I can tell from forums: the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 does rather well and the Tamron, especially the older non VC one, does a bit worse.

A friend of mine is interested with the tamron however such a price isn't available.

Had the same a while ago, with another French site, the listed price was either 999 if I was checking for the first time from a location 1199 EUR if I check another time

The 10-24 looks interesting. The new 70-300, on the other hand, looks like a very minor improvement, not really worth chasing to replace the existing version (looks like it has none of the mechanical improvements that I had pointed out as being worthy of implementing). Perhaps there's a reason it is only being released in Japan.

The new Tamron 70-200mm G2 has a revised optical formula 23 elements in 17 groups and is set to sell for $1,200 less than half the price of the very expensive Nikor. We will have to wait and see if it has also addressed the focus breathing issue of the first model.

  It also seems that these G2 updated lenses will sport new optical formulas, this will be needed for the newly announced 10-24mm WA which was never that good at the 10mm end.

 

Everybody is upgrading their lens line ups these days, model life has dropped to a few years!
