FWIW, dpreview isn't all THAT impressed it seems. Quite pricey for what is.

Understatement of the year .......... $2,199 for a 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 ?????????
..... ridiculous !! .... are you paying for the rather over the top sun stars rendering at a rate of fifty dollars a star ????

Sigma will rejoice - their 100-400mm DN is surely on the same level at the very least.
The sunstar pics on the Pana website are sort-of nice though.

Where did you read $2199??
From dpr: "The 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 Macro OIS will ship in April with an MSRP of $1249, though it will be offered at a $999 promotional price at launch."

The price is on the official Panasonic page Klaus linked to... Panasonic Australia, so, it's the price in Australian dollars
So, not that insanely expensive in the end, still quite expensive for an average zoom.

....... I forgot OL was quoting Aussi dollars .......
..... the exchange rate shows how the Aussies are punished on exchange rates plus duties ......
........ the exchange rate is I US dollar = 1.29 Aussi .......
1,249 USD = 1,611 Aussi dollars ....... where did the extra 588 AUD come from ??
...... it must be from Value Subtracted Tax ......
..... in reality the US always gets the best deals ....

Price-wise it appears somewhat in line with the Canon 70-300 L. Mind you, that one was a shock when it came out - back then, it looked like Canon was aiming to take out all the consumer full-frame lenses, leaving only L lenses and EF-S for everything below. Thankfully either the impression was false, or they reversed course shortly thereafter.
I wonder how this one compares quality-wise... it sure is large, and a 77mm filter for a lens in this class is a new thing (even the Canon L had a 67mm thread, and the Tamron a 62mm one, even though the Sony G displayed upward creep by using 72mm filters...)

I'm wondering why the dpreview folks are shooting at these insanely high shutter speeds (& ISO settings).
Unlike the comments in their video, it seems to be a pretty sharp lens at 300mm though.

Looks sharp to me, plus the build quality and compensation for focus breathing, plus 1:2 macro at 300mm does not come for free.
I bet they will be licking Fujifilm's boots regarding XF 70-300 - a $799 APS-C lens.
You just can't have too many lenses...
