Is it just the restyled 28/2.8 pancake from a decade ago? Lenstip even had a review of it, and I have to admit the lens looked cute, although clearly was not for me. Smile

Yeah, that lens was a great little pancake.... for APS-C. Not great on FF.

If Lenstip's findings are to be believed, it was alright stopped down. My remark was more about it being MF.

Every lens is more or less alright when stopped down.... Issues generally are when lenses are used with bigger aperture settings. And this 28mm is really not great on FF when not stopped down a lot...

This "new" "S" lens has made the look more old Nikon (pre-Ai, pre-K) than the "N" version (N already stood for "Nikkor look"). 
I think that is the only difference.
SL II looked like a metal manual focus lens. SL II N looked more like a pre-K Nikkor manual focus lens. SL II S refines the pre-K Nikkor look.
