They seem to have overdone it with switches this time ;-)

IDK if it's a good or bad thing though. My bog standard EF 70-200/2.8 IS (first gen) is perfectly fine as it is.
For me it is a good thing. The Canon's FOV widens a lot towards MFD, where all Canon's former 70-200mm lenses showed the FOV to narrow towards MFD.

A 70-200mm f2.8 is not a type of lens that will exploit the wider mount. Sony's limited IBIS performance might be related to the narrow mount, though.

Anyway looks like a great lens, and the price is "remarkable", too... Unfortunately. Interesting that it only has 17 elements while my ages old Canon 70-200/2.8 has 23 I think?
17 is the new 23? The Canon RF 70-200mm f2.8 also has 17 elements.

You can see it in the specs, your 1st gen f2.8 IS reaches 0.17x at 1.4m, the RF reaches 0.23x at 0.7m (half the distance). half the distance should have given 0.17 x 2 = 0.34x magnification, of the lenses behaved the same.
