Looks like adapting the old EF mount 100-400 is a better idea?

Well, that would be double the weight ...

It's not bad considering the price. The really stupid thing is the lack of the gasket, especially for a lens that is going to be frequently used in the wild. How much does it cost a gasket?

It's a non-L lens, what can you expect? Maybe even a HOOD IN THE BOX? Big Grin (I guess the only exception so far is the new 200-800, but it's definitely not in the same price bracket, so I guess it might be counted as a crypto-L lens, like the 400DO).

Well it is light yes but really slow, even when hiking on a bright sunny day light is barely enough for 400mmf8...
For sports, birding and wildlife the old Canon 100-400L would eat it for breakfast and for this type of shooting weight wouldn't really matter....
IMHO light weight and small size make sense for traveling, hiking and street photography yes, but for other scenarios, weight doesn't really matter
