Not sure what to think of this .... https://explore.omsystem.com/au/en/om-3

It's just an OM-1 II in a different body, isn't it? Plus a few gimmicks?

I am also not fully sure what to make from it.

The reviews are pretty positive of those which used it for some time are pretty positive on has to say.  Nice to see that OM-System gets some positive headlines.  It seems to be quite an inspiring camera.  There are few things I am not so fond about:

The OM-3 is not particularly small, it seems larger than the genuine Olympus OM-1 from the 70ies.  I think the large battery might be to blame.  This can be seen in the pictures in e.g. the AP review: https://amateurphotographer.com/review/om-system-om-3-review/  What I am missing is the dial around the lens mount.   To me the shutter dial around the lens mount was always the distinguishing feature of an OM-camera.

Overall it is a bit of premium camera.  You pay for the design.  If you like the design, it might be for you.  I hope it does well.

What I don't understand is why the MFT refuses to go back to its roots.
e.g. the Panasonic GM1/5 or Pen G sell for mad prices over at eBay - and this should be a good indication for what people want from MFT.
Trying to compete with FF feels like a doomed approach to me.
The OM-3 will surely generate some sales within the MFT community, but outside this community - why should you prefer the OM-3 over the Nikon ZF if you want a retro system camera? Sure, the OM-3 is a few grams more lightweight but if you buy a retro camera you aren't really into spec optimization to start with.

Oh well, this image:

https://www.43rumors.com/wp-content/uplo....37.33.png

might be the explanation why OM-System went with a lower resolution EVF.   The finder on the OM-1 ii is just too large to fit the OM-3.

I am really wondering what OM-System's strategy is.   They said to IR almost two years ago that there might not be an E-M10 iv replacement in the pipeline.  Not sure whether they have revised that strategy since or not.  If not, I am wondering whether they want to go in a Leica direction of premium products only.   There is no entry level Leica, and I don't think there will be one any time soon.  The price updates to the 25/1.8 and 17/1.8 due to the Mk ii refresh also points to "moving out of entry level".

A number of reviews clearly pointed that the OM-3 is about style and usability.   I for one can not stand the size of a typical 24-70/2.8.  I am currently really enjoying my Olympus 45/1.8.  If you now come back this is equivalent to a 90/3.5 in full frame, that is correct.   But where is that small Nikon 90/3.5 to fit the Zf?

I also doubt, significant folk will buy into mFT because of the OM-3, but I am sure it will prevent people from leaving the system.

I reckon they've seen the success of the Fuji X100V/VI and thought that it was worth to join the theme.
However, even so - why not a Pen-F II? The OM-3 is even wider than the OM-1. In practical terms, the setup is not even smaller when attaching a lens.

Not much wrong with OM-3, I reckon it will resonate reasonably well with relevant user base.
However, I also wonder why Pana or OM neglect root M34 values, like size. I would love to see rangefinder style body, like Pen F, GX or small GM, with new internals. At least I would buy one. :-)

Rumor has it, that in addition to the OM-3, they are also working on a new Pen. Let's see if it comes soon and at which market it aims.

I haven't seen any new products from them until now. Am I missing out on too much information?
