Forums > Back > Ok just one more for luck ........ and S/H F mount lenses going for crazy prices ...
#1
Hi guys it's some years back (10 years or so) since I hunted for a standard portrait lens for my Nikon DSLRs, mainly for use with the D750 ..... at that time used AF85mm F1.8D lenses were abundant and AF-S 85mm F1.8G lens were short on the ground ....... so I bought the AF-D version ....
... since that time I have kept an eye out for the G version and one at a decent price that never came to light ...... that is until a few days back when I found S/H one for 212 euros from Rakuten ..... with 6 months guarantee and insurance ..... my first lens purchase in eight years or so!

The 85D version is in fact a good lens, however lacks bite wide open, Nikon needed to update the D lens to a G version with a built in motor and MF on the fly and they nailed the G version which is better in every respect.
It's probably of little interest now in this ML world that we now live in, on a lens site where one of the last Nikon F lenses tested was at the beginning of 2017 eight years ago ....  Cool
As for the second hand DSLR/lens market these F mount lenses are for sale everywhere, ebay, facebook, le bon coin etc .... though at the same prices as they were selling for when they were in their heyday .... dealers are asking less than private sellers .... IMHO very few of the lenses are selling at all and remain on sale for months on end ........ I will see how well the AF85mm F1.8D lens sells when I put it up for sale.

  I just hope I get a good G copy .....

No need for self-deprecation... all DSLR lenses are eminently adaptable to mirrorless anyway. I run a mixed stable of EF and Z mount lenses, with the heavy tilt towards the former, and I'm not feeling left out of this game in any way. Of course the EF mount lenses have a theoretic advantage in adaptability, but for a Nikon Z mount user, being able or unable to adapt their older lenses to RF mount is irrelevant.

The 85G is a great lens, although I think that I am in the possession of the greatest 85mm f/1.8 lens of all time. Smile

Ok guys I just got shafted! ..... I bought the lens through Rakuten who are just an agent for pros or private sellers .......
The situation was the ad was for a AF-S85mm F1.8G complete with a picture of the lens and what I didn't see was the small print in light gray which said older model .......
I received the lens this morning it was yet another AF85mm F1.8 not even the D model.
I telephoned Rakuten and explained the situation saying the announce was clearly for a AF-S 85mm F1.8G, but he found this small print and said there was nothing he could do, we spoke for some time and he was very sympathetic as the seller had clearly tried to deceive the true identity of the product. He said I could try to reclaim a refund with the seller, apparently he sells regularly with them so he had clearly a plan to deceive even what the product was and how to cover his tracks, so he is clearly a fraudulent smart arse.
So I'm stuck now with a second non D copy to pair with my D version.

Jeese I have learned nothing in my life ......

Hope you get the situation sorted out.
I've ordered stuff online twice (once the Sigma 14mm f/2.8 from KEH, 15 years ago, and now the Laowa 10mm f/2.8 from Aliexpress, my first time ordering something that expensive online), and both times it turned out all right, though I was nervous all the way through.

I think buying through KEH or MPB is quite safe with respect to returns.
Even eBay has some protection mechanism.
