So f/2.8 is "smallish" aperture now?

For a FF prime? Yes? And did you look at the lens construction at all? Yes, 18mm is quite wide. Yes, the construction is elaborate. Yes, it is not surprising that it performs well wide open, on 24mp.
Any chance this lens will be reviwed here? I honestly trust this site much more that pretty much any other.
I am suspicious of the review sites where all the lenses get a minumum of 4 stars..
