Quite good blur albeit poor highlight rendition, I'd say. Low contrast at large aperture.
At this price they will not sell many though.

Yes, I agree.. Very nice blur for 40mm, but cat's eye shapes due to a too narrow barrel, outlining of the bokeh discs, and coma is apparent.
And yes, that price... I guess they aim for low numbers (as they are new to the game) which demands a high price.

They claim best sharpness for f/5.6 ... that is 5 (plus a bit) f-stops
down from max-aperture ... which is at least unusual for a prime.
Most of them get their best values 2 to 3 stops down.
Looking at the MTF-curves ... while things look ok-ish at f/5.6 ...
sharpness is next to nonexistant at f/0.85 ... well, probably
sharpness is not the reason why one would buy such a lens.
I do find some of the sample images nice ... but at the price they ask
for it, I easily get a used 5D plus a 50L which allows the same
type of images (with the plus of AF and aperture controlled by the
camera). So, likely this 40/0.85 will remain a gimmick for those who
already have everything else.
Just my thoughts ... Rainer

The price of the CINE version of the SLR Magic 50mm f/0.95 is not that far removed from this... and it's a full frame lens. If someone can fork out $2K for a left field lens like this, $3K is probably not totally out of his/her reach. And the SLR Magic is now proven as a quality lens. Just my $.02

Possibly. As mentioned I gave up on the NEX6. Not because of the NEX6 but because I just don't have the time.
However, given the average production lifespan of a Sony NEX, those 16mp sensors will be history very soon anyway.
