China comes under Trumps new luxury goods taxation laws in September 2019
#1
Hi guys,

With Trump's crusade to increase the taxes on China's luxury goods exports to the US due to arrive this September .... and with the possibility of this 10% tax rising to 25% ....... things are looking less good for China's production of luxury and many other goods which also include cameras, smart phones etc.
Japanese camera manufacturers such as Nikon and Panasonic saw what was coming, Nikon folded their Chinese factory producing the Nikon 1 series in 2017, under the auspice of lesser demand for the camera, but probably more likely, they foresaw what was coming!
Panasonic have also closed down a plant producing sensors, capacitors and memory cards ... again they saw the financial burden of a certain downturn in producing goods in China and plan to produce elsewhere.
This means there will be less reason for foreign countries to invest in Chinese based plants .... knowing they will be walking straight into US trade barriers.

it's going to be a tough call for camera manufacturers to produce out of China and a good opportunity for other countries to take their place.

That's not the only increase in prices for Chinese companies. In Europe, some Chinese companies opened up warehouses. Other rely massively on (too) lax customs control like in the UK. With Borisi Johnson galopping out of the EU the times of comparatively simple shipments from the UK to the EU are soon to become a thing of the past.

I doubt that Nikon foresaw Trump's action in 2017 - they just could not place enough N1 bodies and lenses in the market. So basically they shut down the Chinese plants because of Nikon's poor marketing and their inability to compete with other brands / better concepts.

....... it was a dying model certainly.

Maybe they did (or did not see) Trump's action in 2017 even if only in it's "niggling threat form" but not in it's entirety ..... they could have produced other products there ....... whatever, Nikon will not be looking there any further .....

Nikon is down to 1/6th of the volume they sold in 2013. That has more to do with closing of plants than any irrational Trump bullshit.

Whatever, as I said it's killed it for China, nobody will want to produce cameras and their lenses now !!

With that rationale, no one will be wanting to produce any cameras and lenses anymore, as Trump is hurting the US economy more than that of China with his nonsense.

Many want to produce cameras and lenses ......... it's just not so many want to buy them !!
...... and of course it will hurt China ........ as the US economy picks up $100 tax on washing machines and the like .....

..... however, it maybe is good for the economy , it just isn't good for americans !!

The trouble with american presidents is they automatically think they are president of the world !!

Edit update: Trump backing down for Christmas ????....... WOW !!
