The idea of Glacier is that you save a lot of money by accepting its slowness. Which is good - as I see it it's just another backup, the very emergency one, that you probably use once in a very long time, so it doesn't need to be fast; for the "normal" backup purposes you keep on with the usual stuff - for instance, I have a RAID 5 NAS and four copies on DVD  Rolleyes (even though not for all the past years), which make me feel pretty safe, unless my house burns. Glacier would help in such an extreme case.

 

For the record, I've not used it yet (but for some tests): I want to use a client which does serious encryption before sending the bits. Not that I have secrets or fear of having my stuff stolen (I don't make money out of it), it's just that all that eavesdropping stinks.
