next PZ lens test report: Fujinon XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS
#19
Quote:Thanks for the excellent Fuji 18-55mm analysis. Its quite difficult to find sites where a comparison between known Nikon, Canon and the new Fuji lenses can be made - this site makes the task much easier.

In that light I looked at your sharpness figures for the lenses in the 17(18)-50(55)mm ranges, it seemd the Nikon 17-55mm f2.8 on a d7000 had the highest mtf figures, so I spreadsheeted those together with the Fuji 18-55mm f2.8-4 on an X-Pro1. From this I made graphs to compare the two at each focal length you presented.

Finally I included the Fuji 35mm f1.4 at f5.6 and f8 in each graph as a reference.

From this it was not only clear just how sharp the Fuji 18-55mm was it also fairs well against the 35mm f1.4. Given the inclusion of OIS this made the first lens choice easy, I'll buy the zoom and add the 1.4 primes over time, first the 35mm f1.4 and the other two as they are released.

The graphs are based on your mtf data, as I'd like to share my findings on dpreview at some later time in an article, I ask your permission to use my graphs in that article - with due credit given to you as my data source.

Whatever you decide, the data has been invaluable for me when planning my lens purchaces, so a big hearty thanks. :-D

ps. As for the camera, the x-e1 has the highest res evf which suits me best and is inexpensive/small enough to dedicate a camera for each lens if ever needed. The x-e1 with either 34mm f1.4 or 18-55mm f2.8-4 is currently running at au$1200 with full Fuji Australia stock and warranty, whereas a full Nikon Australia warrantied Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.4G runs around au$1800 and Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED (no vr) for au$1450 - both with no Nikon camera included. So far for me at least the Fuji Australia warranty has been impeccable, so any de centering on a lens is an easy fix.

You are aware that cross-system comparisons are technically invalid ... ?
