next PZ lens test report: Fujinon XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS
#28
Quote:Distortion is better on Samsung,
No, it isn't.

Quote:but at 20mm,
Exactly. Both show strong barrel distortion at widest angle, but that is 18mm for the Fuji, and 20mm for the Samsung. At 23mm the Fuji has 0.952% barrel distortion left. For sure the Fuji will do better than the Samsung at 20mm.

Quote:vignetting is better on Samsung.
Not really. The Fuji shows 0.7 stops at 18mm at f3.6, the Samsung shows 1.05 stops at 20mm at f3.5. For the rest the vignetting is not really an issue for both lenses, in the ranges they overlap.

Quote:Resolution is mostly better on Samsung, especially in corners, but sometimes slightly better on Fuji in the center.
Not really. At 18mm, the Fuji does better in all areas (center, border, corner) at f4, than the Samsung at 20mm at f3.5. At f5.6 the Fuji does better in all areas. At f8 diffraction softening sets in for both sensors and they are more or less the same. (Same goes to f11).

At 35mm, the Fuji is MUCH sharper at f4 than the Samsumg at f4.5 in the center, the Samsung a bit sharper in the border and corner. Same for f5.6. At f8 and f11 again diffraction starts to limit the resolution of both lenses.

At 50mm for the Samsung and 55mm for the Fuji, the Fuji at f4 has pretty similar resolution tho the Samsung at f5.6. When both are at f5.6, the Fuji has significantly higher center resolution, where the borders and corners are similar. At f8 the Samsung shows a bit better center resolution, the borders and corners are similar. At f11 both lenses are similar.

My guess is that you have ignored the different maximum results the different cameras with different sensors can achieve. The maximum score for the Fuji in the bar charts is set to 3100, for the Samsung 3200. You have to look at the bar chart heights, not the numbers.

Quote:CA are better on Samsung on 50mm vs 55mm, but better on Fuji on 35mm.
Also on CA you are not right. The only real difference we see is at 35mm, where there is a significant difference in numbers. In reality, both lenses do well and one will not notice CA much. At 50 vs 55mm. the results are so close (1.18 vs 0.91) that one can not tell the difference in images!

So, all in all the Fuji performs a tad better, has a bigger focal range, and a stop bigger aperture across the range.
