Maybe it depends on people and usage. While not a big sample size nor statistically representative, people I know typically go from compacts, perhaps to bridge, then to DLSRs. I think I've only come across one mirrorless user in the last two years. When people think serious cameras, they still think DSLR. Yes, we know a mirrorless can be 90%+ of that, but where it may appeal to the "small and simple to use" crowd, it puts off the "I want the best" crowd.
And this isn't a male macho gadget freak thing either: most of the people I know are girls and they are not put off by DSLR size.
I also find it highly amusing that people getting the Oly whatever it's called say how great the small size is, then rapidly proceed to buy grips and things to make it easier to hold. Do you want small or not?

The focus speed depends a lot on the system. For single shot, mirrorless can be as fast as it needs to be. Only tracking is a remaining weakness.
I think there is an old saying in business that applies to Pentax. You don't beat the establishment by doing the same thing as they do. micro4/3 was different, and it gained a foothold against CaNikon. Whatever Pentax do in the future, it can't be a "me too" product. But there's not a lot of space left...
