Now that is a nice lens for mft.
#3
MFT has clearly crossed the critical mass. They are red hot now.
#4
*sigh* another "dumb" lens. I don't get it - why? Cosina is a member of MFT alliance and they did make AF/AE lenses back when they were using their own name.

They have 1 to 2 years of a head start over the rest and two companies are doing the core pieces of the system. Other companies catering for more exotic needs (like Voigtländer). That gives momentum.

When using an EVF or the camera screen for framing, the differences between an APS-C and a 43rd sensor are not as significant as they are in an SLR with optical finder.

Bases on that I think that being able to buy the pieces you need now instead of having them promised for the next year is more important that a few 100 lines in the MTF, or another half stop in the ISO. Roadmaps always carry the risk of vapourware.

Beyond the headstart and the strategic advantage it offered, I think MFT also must have hit the sweetspot technologically wise as it seems that this sensor size, mount size & flange distance was indeed very well thought out : quite early, we have seen sound ultra wide angle designs (7-14, 9-18), an excellent kit lens (Panasonic 14-45, yes it is THAT good for a kit lens; regardless of the software corrections), a truly surprising 20mm f/1.7 and, at least to me, a very good body size to image quality ratio (thus not only "noise & DR" but the whole system) from the start. One could argue about that for hours but the E-P1 really had something to show beyond the reviews and beyond Panasonic cameras and I ditched the 40D without looking back (well, not entirely true). And it mostly kept evolving beautifully (except for one or two "strange decisions" and pointless kit lenses iterations).

Also very exciting as it clears some uncertainties for the consumer.

As excited as I am, I think I'll play your role here and allow myself to doubt a little.

It is true for both the 25mm & this likely 17.5mm that it's a bit of a steep price for f/1.8 equivalent lenses.

Also considering the F/0.95 image characteristics are quite a signature too. Something both good AND bad I think, making the 0.95 aperture perhaps not always desirable. I guess I wouldn't be annoyed if they were in the 500-600€ price range. But at 700-1000€, hmmmm. Let's wait and see.

Still sexy though.

Yes, but those were mostly terrible, you certainly don't want these to return <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

I think there is a big manual only market out there and the lenses tend to be smaller, more robust looking, and maybe other trade offs. I love this lens. Depth of field wise on ff I never liked dipping below f/4 on this fov, so it being equivalent to f/2 on ff is a non-issue to my mind. But being able to open up so much is crazy, think of the street night photography you can do. I could get great hand helds being able to open up that much- opens up a new style of shooting I've never tried before.
