I guess the best example for me, within my limited experience, is when I was looking into wide-angle lenses. I wanted to look at all the reviews for lenses suitable for Nikon APS-C and wider than 16mm. So, I looked at both Canon and Nikon sections for lenses tested on APS-C, both Nikon and third-party.
Sigma 8-16mm, Tokina 11-16mm, Tokina 12-24mm all made it to my 'shortlist', whereas the Sigma 10-20mm and Tamron 10-24mm didn't (I did read all the reviews in full.. several times..!), but at the time (and possibly now) some of these weren't tested on Nikon... Does the difference between the systems mean tests of third party lenses on Canon give no indication of how they will perform on a same-format system by another manufacturer..? I know results aren't comparable across systems (you've made the point clearly!) but I'd be surprised if that's the case.
